What do sharks and rays have in common? What makes them so unique and fascinating? Sharks and rays have existed for almost 400 million years and have adapted to live in most marine ecosystems. In Australia, there are over 300 species of sharks and rays, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Different species have special features to be able to survive in their habitats, which can range from tropical reefs to rivers, estuaries and open oceans. Some can travel thousands of kilometers, while others are homebodies, staying in small, localised areas. Despite being some of the most ancient animals on the Planet, many shark and ray species are under threat of extinction from human activities. In this program, participants learn about the biology, ecology and conservation of sharks and rays through interactive and fun rotating activities. These activities include an ecofriendly art-and-craft activity and take home gift.

Marine turtles are among the most threatened species globally and were among the first animals recorded to ingest plastic. Today they are now two of the top six species most heavily impacted by marine debris.

Our turtle program provides an insight into the lives of our most ancient living fossils—our sea turtles. Through an interactive presentation this program focuses on the biology, ecology, threats, and conservation status of our marine turtles today. A major focus of the program will be on marine debris and litter and addressing our plastic problem, giving attendees insight into the 8 million tonnes of plastic that enters our oceans each year and the link between it and our turtles.

Following the presentation, interactive workstations will provide attendees with a series of hands-on activities, giving them the opportunity to test their new knowledge and further delve into the private lives of these ancient dinosaurs. As part of the interactive workshop activities, attendees will learn how to take simple actions to help marine life and everyone will receive a sustainable ecofriendly gift to take home.

These plants and animals drift in the ocean, letting the currents and wind take them on long journeys. Learn how these tiny plants make energy and help to regulate our Planet’s climate. Participants will look into this incredible microscopic world, meet the strange and diverse species and identify their own ocean hero. Participants will also learn how plankton are in danger from climate change, pollution and other threats and how we can work together to take actions to save them. Participants will enjoy an informative talk from our marine biologist, get involved in interactive activities and make their own crafty creation to take home

Journey with Dolphins is a unique program offered nowhere else! Journey with Dolphins is a multi-session program that includes three
sessions (or lessons) and an optional excursion. Students learn about marine animals and their environment whilst being encouraged to
explore their own qualities/attributes.
Each lesson focuses on a different topic related to coastal ecosystems, marine life and sustainable actions – . The lessons comprise a range of activities that will promote self-awareness (immersing in one’s inner world), group awareness (building social skills) and environmental awareness (activating citizenship). Each session includes knowledge building, storytelling and an environmentally-friendly craft activity.
Optional excursions:
Option 1: Guided walk to explore the diversity of our coastal ecosystems. During this activity, students are encouraged to make connections between what they have learnt and the different types of habitats, from inland to the coast. They learn about their importance and become aware of why we should protect these habitats as they play key roles not only for the wildlife but also for our coastal communities.
Option 2: Marine Debris – Students engage in a beach clean-u following a scientific method of collection and classification of debris. The data collected are entered in national database. Students reflect about the findings and what they can do at the personal level to make a difference to this type of marine pollution.
