NSW Dolphin Census Citizen Science Training

The NSW Dolphin Census Citizen Science Training Course prepares participants to take part in the state-wide Dolphin Census on 30 May 2026.

This short course provides essential training on dolphin species identification, survey protocols, behavioural interpretation, data recording standards, and safety requirements. Participants will learn why the Dolphin Census is needed, how their observations contribute to filling critical knowledge gaps across New South Wales, and how to submit accurate, reliable data.

By completing this training, you will gain the confidence to participate safely and effectively — helping to build a coordinated snapshot of dolphin distribution, habitat use, and relative abundance across the NSW coast to inform conservation measures.

This training outlines uses standardised protocols for the East Coast Dolphin Watch Citizen Science program.

 

About the NSW Dolphin Census

The NSW Dolphin Census is a coordinated, citizen science event designed to capture a state-wide snapshot of dolphin presence and distribution across New South Wales in 30th May 2026.

Delivered in partnership by us at Dolphin Research Australia | Ocean Education & Conservation with NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service and funded by the NSW Marine Estate Management Strategy.

Who is this Course for?

This course is designed for all registered participants of the NSW Dolphin Census, including naturalists, coastal residents, beach walkers, boaters and paddlers, fishers and marine users, students and educators, anyone interested in being part and contributing to the Dolphin Census.

No prior experience is required to do this training, however, all participants must complete the training.

Estimated completion time: 60 minutes

By the end of this course, participants will:

  • Understand the purpose and conservation need for the NSW Dolphin Census
  • Recognise the main dolphin species found in NSW waters
  • Learn the standardised protocols & methods
  • Learn how to interpret behaviours, estimate group size and composition
  • Understand how to record data
  • Know how to safely conduct surveys
  • Accurately submit data using the approved reporting platform
